ICSA Colorado August 2010 Meeting

Thank you to Denver Water for hosting our August Meeting.  We heard about some of the types of calls they receive from consumers.  And the central location made it easy for everyone to attend.

Carol Gillet from Gillet Consulting Services Presented:
Bold Leadership:  What It Looks Like From the Individual Level to Management

Carol told us about her experiences identifying leadership qualities in herself and others.  You may have leaders in your organization who do not have direct reports.

Leaders need to be able to deal with conflict.  When conflict occurs, especially in struggling financial times, a leader needs to deal with conflict quickly.  Being good at conflict management is an important component of leadership.

Carol had us look at our daily lives and examine how we spent our time.  I is important to have a good work and life balance.  Since most of us spend a large portion of our day at work, it is important to enjoy it.  We also filled out a matrix identifying four areas:
  • Things that we are good at but don't like
  • Things that we are good at and love
  • Things that we are not good at and don't like
  • Things that we are not good at but love
This gave us all something to really think about.

Carol concluded with saying to hire people who are smarter than you.  Hire for a talent and then delegate the tasks that you do not like or are not good at.  Put people in roles they really love.
